Our Perspective

Lawyers and crisis specialists should meet and make strategic decisions on behalf of their clients.
Lawyers, Demigods, Outrage Management & Crisis Communications
Introduction by Thom Fladung, Hennes Communications
At Hennes Communications, we often tell clients that they have an attorney for the Court of Law. But they have us for the Court of Public Opinion.  And those two courts often require different – and at times conflicting – strategies.  Attorneys have persuasive arguments for tailoring a strategy completely around that court of law. Staying out of jail or avoiding paying multimillion-dollar lawsuit damages are, after all, powerful motivators.  But saving your reputation also should be a powerful motivator – especially since a reputation is a crucial asset.
Truth and Lies
A Sobering Study About the Allure of Fake News
Introduction by Thom Fladung, Hennes Communications
In order to fight it, you have to know what it is.  Studies show that fake news and false rumors reach more people, penetrate deeper into the social network and spread much faster than accurate stories. In fact, a false story reaches 1,500 people six times quicker, on average, than a true story does.
Sex Up the Truth !
Sex Up the Truth to Battle Fake News
By Howard Fencl, Hennes Communications
We can’t just throw our hands up in the air and accept that lies win on social media. For years, we’ve been posting tactics you can use to fight back when your company is under even the most unrelenting troll attack. But those tactics may just not be enough given the sheer number of happy liars trashing up Twitter, Facebook and the like.
PPP Loans
You Took a PPP Loan. Get Ready to Talk About It.
By Bruce Hennes, Hennes Communications
The SBA just released detailed info about the borrowers who received loans from the Paycheck Protection and Economic Injury Disaster Loans Program.  The info released includes the names, precise amounts, addresses, industry codes and lender information for the COVID-19 relief program’s 5.2 million loans. The SBA had previously only released detailed information for loans above $150,000 and with dollar ranges rather than specified loan amounts. Did your company or client apply for and accept PPP dollars? If so, you must be prepared to answer questions about your acceptance of that loan if asked about it.

In the News

Typosquatting is a scourge that everyone needs to know about.
What is Typosquatting, Why It’s Important & How to Avoid It
Typosquatting, or URL hijacking, is a form of cybersquatting targeting people that accidentally mistype a website address directly into their web browser URL field. Cybersquatters register domain names that are a slight variation of the target brand (usually a common spelling error).  Typosquatting is a technique increasingly used by bad actors to spread misinformation and engage in internet crime.
Transform chaos into calm.
Absorb Chaos, Transform It Into Calm and Give Back Hope
At times, we are called to give presentations about new products or policies. Other times, we might be asked to inspire or challenge our audience members. But other times, we are called to speak into times of crisis. National and global challenges have whittled away at our sense of hope and resolve. What do you say in times like those?
Rogue Lawyers
On-Line Review Response by Rogue Consultant Leads to Suspension for OK Lawyer
An Oklahoma lawyer was suspended last month for two years based on misconduct involving an unlawful response to a bad on-line review of the lawyer’s services.  The disciplinary case is a lesson in being careful about who you’re dealing with when you hire a consultant, and also about not doubling down when confronted with a potential problem.

Attention School Board Members,
Superintendents & Attorneys

The Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) has entered into a strategic partnership with Hennes Communications to provide crisis management and communications services to public school systems throughout the state of Ohio facing sudden challenges to their organizations’ reputations and operations. With this partnership, OSBA member school leaders have access
365 days a year to expert crisis communications professionals.

Not Everything is a Crisis

Most crises are unexpected and sudden - a traffic accident, explosion, fire, chemical leak, social media attack or criminal arrest.

While a crisis usually appears to be sudden, sometimes you should have seen it coming.  For example, activists who hate your product, lax enforcement of company policies and procedures, deferred maintenance on heavy equipment, or instability in your leadership ranks.

More often than not, what you're probably facing is an issue, a situation that can and should have been foreseen. For instance, three months from now you know you're going to close a plant, discontinue a product, get a new board chair, acquire a company or announce a rate hike.  For another example, click here.

Whether it's a crisis or an issue, carefully crafted communications targeting the appropriate audience at the right time can go a long way toward mitigating the amount of reputational damage you experience and the work you need to do to restore confidence among your stakeholders.

Identifying an issue early gives you the added ability to craft a well-rounded strategic plan that not only identifies what you say, it enables you to carefully consider allies you might enlist, initiatives you might employ to blunt the effectiveness of your adversaries and other tactics designed to protect your market.

Are there threats looming on your horizon you should address now?  Let us help you create the communications to help you avoid them from evolving from issues you can manage to crises you can’t avoid.

While we sell "crisis" (hence our website name, www.crisiscommunications.com ), the professionals at Hennes Communications understand the difference between crises and issues.

And now, we hope you do, too.

Media Training

No one trains clients for high-stakes situations better than Hennes Communications. We can teach you how to communicate with power, mastering even the toughest interview, speech or presentation.
