Fighting Misinformation: How to Inoculate Your Audience Against Troll Trash Talk
By Howard Fencl, Hennes Communications
Misinformation is called the world’s second pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) gave it a cheeky name – “infodemic.” By any name, it’s driven by fearmongering, (It’ll make you glow in the dark!”) scapegoating, (“Illegal immigrants are to blame!”) discrediting, (“Fauci is covering up!”) and trolling (all of the above!). Here are some tips you can use.

7 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Crisis Communications Firm
By Bruce Hennes, Hennes Communications
Nowadays, every PR firm claims to offer crisis communications.  So, how do you make sure the firm you're calling isn't overstating its abilities?  One place to start is with seven simple questions.

In the News

How ‘Engagement’ Makes You Vulnerable to Manipulation and Misinformation on Social Media
Facebook has been quietly experimenting with reducing the amount of political content it puts in users’ news feeds. The move is a tacit acknowledgment that the way the company’s algorithms work can be a problem.  The heart of the matter is the distinction between provoking a response and providing content people want.  There is logic to using the wisdom of the crowds in these algorithms. There are also substantial pitfalls in how the social media companies do so in practice.
Florida Condo Collapse
6 Crisis Management Lessons From the Florida Condo Collapse
The tragic condominium collapse that occurred recently in Surfside, Fla., has shed light on the importance of crisis management. Identifying threats before they arise can be a challenge. Emergencies can be difficult, if not impossible, to anticipate, but how to respond to them can be thought out beforehand. Proper planning is the first step in handling a crisis.
National Preparedness Month
It’s National Preparedness Month
National Preparedness Month (NPM) is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The 2021 theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”
The Power of Talk: Who Gets Heard and Why
From the archives, and still powerful, Deborah Tannen, writing in The Harvard Business Review: The head of a large division of a multinational corporation was running a meeting devoted to performance assessment. Each senior manager stood up, reviewed the individuals in his group, and evaluated them for promotion. Although there were women in every group, not one of them made the cut. One after another, each manager declared, in effect, that every woman in his group didn’t have the self-confidence needed to be promoted. The division head began to doubt his ears. How could it be that all the talented women in the division suffered from a lack of self-confidence?
The 10-Second Rule
How the 10-Second Rule Can Dramatically Change Your Conversations and Make You a Better Leader
Communicating is easily the single most important job of leaders. If leadership is mostly about influence–and it is–then the ability to communicate a vision and motivate people to move toward that vision is the single most important characteristic a leader can have.
Stage Fright
I Can't Go On - What's Behind Stage Fright
Stage fright has been aptly described as “self-poisoning by adrenaline.” In response to stress, the adrenal glands pump the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline) into the bloodstream, causing the body to shift into a state of high arousal. The person’s muscles tense, he sweats and shakes, his heart pounds, his mouth goes dry, he has trouble breathing, he may become nauseated or dizzy, and his throat constricts, making his voice rise in pitch. This is the so-called “fight or flight” response, which our species is thought to have developed because it helped prepare the body for forceful action in response to a threat. But what Cro-Magnon man needed upon finding a bear in his cave is not what a modern person needs in order to play King Lear.
